Eyüp Sultan Mosque
Istanbul’s holiest mosque
About Eyüp Sultan Mosque
Eyüp Sultan, at the top of the Golden Horn, is one of the most important places of pilgrimage in Turkey, built around the tomb of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, a companion and standard-bearer of the Prophet Muhammad. The square, the tiled tomb and the old cemetery climbing towards Pierre Loti Hill have a gentle, devout atmosphere, especially on Fridays. Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered, a headscarf for women), take off your shoes, and avoid prayer times.
