Nicaea, tiles and a lake

About İznik

İznik, ancient Nicaea, lies on a lake about an hour north-east of Bursa. The First Council of Nicaea met here in 325; its Roman walls and gates still stand, the church of Hagia Sophia in the centre is now a mosque, and the town gave its name to the famous Ottoman tiles, which workshops make again today.
