The New Mosque was begun in 1597 and completed in 1665 under the patronage of the queen mothers of the age; the Spice Bazaar was built as part of its complex. Its domes and minarets frame the end of the Galata Bridge, and its courtyard and steps are a favourite meeting place by the ferry piers. Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered, a headscarf for women), take off your shoes, and avoid prayer times.
